The legendary, Howard University homecoming was last week. Before I came to Howard, that was all that i heard about. "Howard homecoming this...Howard homecoming that". Howard is an HBCU (historically black college university) and everything about Howard is revolved around African Americans: its classes, its meaning, its people. So i figured that its homecoming would be too. I was completely wrong.
Yard Fest is an extravagant festival where musicians perform and there is food EVERYWHERE. My father as well as my sister attended Howard. They attend Howard's homecoming faithfully and they were so surprised this year by the performances at yard fest. They said to me that they weren't used to having so much diversity. All of the performances were geared toward the African American culture, however, their were so many different cultures. They played Caribbean music, African music, Rap, and even jazz. They had artist whose audience was my sisters generation, then they had artist whose audience was my fathers generation. My father and sister said it was by far the BEST homecoming at Howard they have ever been to.

As a freshman at Howard this year i got to experience the homecoming for the first time as well. Before coming to Howard, or even knowing what Howard was, i knew about the homecoming. Ever since the first day of school people had been talking about Howard's homecoming. As soon as homecoming came around the whole school was buzzing and going crazy with excitement. In agreement to Mother_Re-born, Yardfest was definitely the best event of the entire week. I was very close to the stage so i good a really good view and vibe from the music and the artists. The variety of music and artists that came and performed added to all the excitement and i cant wait to see who they bring for next year.
ReplyDeleteYeah totally. Each year, I think Howard keeps improving on the Homecoming events by the year. Hopefully, next year would be better, and we would have a musician from Nigeria (Crossed fingers).
ReplyDeleteI think that yard fest did have a little bit of somethin for everyone to join. You are right, there are so many different kinds of cultures within the black community from a hip hop culture to a carribbean one. Howard university did a good job in statisfying all of them which hints that the university is a very tolerant, accepting campus that encompases many diverse groups.
ReplyDeleteThis was my first homecomming, and I was surprised by the performances as well.
ReplyDeleteThe whole concert was full of surprises.
I never would have guessed that Shaggy would take the stage before Rick Ross.
But I think my favorite part of the whole show was when Slick Rick came out. I've been jammin to slick rick with my dad, during car rides, since forever. I new every word of his rap, and went INSANE when he tood the stage.
I only wish my dad could have seen it.
